Man shot to death while walking across street in downtown Los Angeles

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man in his 40s was gunned down while walking across the street in downtown Los Angeles Friday morning.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. on Gladys Avenue between 5th and 6th streets. Authorities said the victim was walking across the street when someone jumped out of a car and opened fire. The suspect then fled in the vehicle.

A couple volunteering with a group offering free showers were one street over when they said they heard the gunfire and took cover twice.

Authorities said they discovered the victim's body next to a Mercedes, but it was unclear if it was connected to the victim.

No description of the suspect or getaway vehicle was available.

The couple, Darryl and Julie Sockwell, were told their car was parked inside the crime scene, so they had to wait until the investigation was cleared before getting it.

As they waited, they walked right onto another crime scene at 4th and Main streets.

Authorities said there, an off-duty officer was working as a security guard on a movie set when he got into a fight with a possible homeless man walking his dog. The fight escalated and at some point, authorities said the dog attacked, which resulted in the off-duty officer shooting and killing it.

No one else was hurt during the altercation.

"The people that we work with said they come here a lot and they've never had this happen before," Julie Sockwell said.

The incidents happened less within a mile and minutes of each other.

The investigations were ongoing.
