COMMERCE, Calif. (KABC) -- An investigation was underway following an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect hospitalized, Huntington Park police said.

The shooting happened in the 2500 block of Leo Avenue in Commerce around 9:45 p.m. Friday. Two officers were conducting surveillance at a location in the area regarding a murder that had occurred in Huntington Park, authorities said.

While both officers were sitting in an unmarked car, the suspect approached the car on the driver's side and grabbed a handgun from his waistband. The closest officer lowered the window as both officers identified themselves as police.

The suspect then pointed his gun at one of the officers, authorities said, and an officer-involved shooting broke out.

Both officers fired their guns at the suspect, hitting him multiple times in the upper body. He was taken to a hospital in fair condition. The suspect in the shooting was not connected to the officers' surveillance, authorities said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene. Neither of the officers were injured.
