One person was killed and two other people were injured in a crash at a church in Port Hueneme on Sunday.

PORT HUENEME, Calif. (KABC) -- One person was killed and another injured when an elderly woman crashed a vehicle in a church parking lot in Port Hueneme on Sunday.

The crash happened in the 500 block of North 5th Street.

The patrons involved had just left a service at the First Assembly of God Church around 12:30 p.m. when Odessa Edward apparently stepped on the gas pedal, instead of the brake, according to Port Hueneme police Sgt. Baltazar Tapia.

Her vehicle then jumped over two parking pylons and struck Maria McCroskey, 60, of Oxnard and Beverly Oakland, 67, of Camarillo.

Several nearby residents heard the crash and ran to the parking lot to help, but it was too late.

McCroskey was pushed by the vehicle across the parking lot and through the brick wall into the backyard of a nearby home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Edward was hospitalized after having suffered extensive injuries during the impact. Oakland was being treated for minor injuries.
