Suspect shot by Riverside police after firing at multiple officers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect was shot by police and taken into custody after firing at multiple officers in Riverside Saturday morning.

The shooting happened near 14th Street and Howard Avenue around 4:30 a.m., according to a press release issued by Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz.

Two patrol officers engaged in a traffic stop heard gunshots in the area, and as additional officers responded, they were shot at by the suspect and called for help.

Soon after, two more officers who responded were shot at by the gunman at the intersection of Howard Avenue and Cottage Street, the press release stated.

The officers returned fire and struck the gunman.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police identified him as Roberto Jimenes, 37, of Riverside.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
