Lake Balboa suspect fired beanbag shotgun before being killed by LAPD

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The suspect who was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Lake Balboa had fired at least one round from a beanbag shotgun, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said.

The incident happened at Elkwood Street and Andasol Avenue Monday around 1 p.m. Miguel Cano, 34, was declared dead at the scene.

Beck said officers responded to multiple 911 calls about a man running in and out of traffic and "acting aggressively."

"When they responded, they located the subject of the radio call," Beck said. "They tried to take him into custody. He refused to submit to arrest. He charged the officers."

Police shot Cano with a beanbag round, and when that didn't work, an officer used a Taser.

"In fact, the individual was able to confront the officers that had the beanbag shotgun ... and take the beanbag shotgun from the officer," Beck said. "The individual then deployed the beanbag shotgun, fired at least one round at our officers. They returned fire, killing the subject."

Cano's mother, Maria Cordero, told ABC7 that her son had a drinking problem but was not a violent man.
