22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Highland

Authorities arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of stabbing another man in Highland Sunday morning.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies found a stabbing victim near 6th and Bonnie streets around 8:30 a.m.

During the investigation, authorities learned that the suspect, identified as Raul Martinez, asked the victim for a cigarette. When the victim refused, Martinez is said to have stalked the victim for about half a block before attacking him with a folding knife.

The victim was stabbed multiple times and sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital emergency room for treatment.

Surveillance footage showed Martinez and the victim prior to the attack. He was seen exiting a black two-door Honda Civic. The car was later located at an apartment complex in the 22500 block of 5th Street in San Bernardino.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the apartment, found the suspect inside and arrested him. The folding knife was also found with DNA evidence, deputies said.

Martinez was booked into the Central Detention Center and is being held without bail. Authorities said he is a known gang member and was on parole for unrelated felony charges.
