IRVINE, Calif. (KABC) -- An investigation is underway after bones and a human skull were discovered in a remote area near Laguna Canyon Road and the Santiago Creek bed in Irvine, police said.

A city employee found the skull while examining an irrigation system Tuesday, and investigators discovered additional bones Wednesday morning.

The bones appeared to have been in the area for many years, according to the Irvine Police Department.

Coroner's officials will determine the person's identity and cause of death.
