LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles County had America's highest number of pedestrian deaths in 2014, according to a tally from the Auto Insurance Center.

The AIC looked through data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and found that crashes killed 281 pedestrians in L.A. County within that year alone.

The number of fatalities is nearly triple the number of deaths in Maricopa County, Arizona, the second deadliest county for pedestrians.

San Bernardino County ranked sixth, with 66 pedestrian deaths, and San Diego County ranked fourth, with 84 deaths.

The AIC blames the Southern California fatalities on a mix of heavy traffic and high population.

The site noted that although other major cities such as New York, Boston and Seattle also have high populations, they may not have as many pedestrian deaths due to the higher use of public transportation.
