La Canada Elementary school student, Gabriel Gottheim, wins 2016 LA County spelling bee

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A sixth-grade student from La Canada Elementary School won the 2016 Los Angeles County Elementary Spelling Bee.

Gabriel Gottheim won the 80-minute competition after spelling "demarcate" and "memorabilia" correctly. Ryan Yan, a fourth-grader from Coolidge Elementary School in the San Gabriel Unified School District, came in second place.

Gottheim and Yan will advance to the California State Elementary School Spelling Bee Championship that will be held on April 23 in Stockton.

A total of 25 contestants from fourth through sixth grade took part in the county spelling bee.
