Man shot by deputy during confrontation in Highland, officials say

HIGHLAND, Calif. (KABC) -- A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy shot and injured a man who had allegedly pointed a handgun at him Monday night in Highland, officials said.

Deputies were called to a home in the 7700 block of Eucalyptus Drive at 8:05 p.m. on a report of a man with a gun who was threatening to harm a woman inside.

When the deputies arrived, they saw two men in the front yard. One man who had a gun raised his arms and pointed at the deputy, the department said. The deputy fired his own gun, injuring the man. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

The deputy was injured with glass fragments to his face and eyes and was treated at a local hospital.

Investigators say they later learned the man had fired the handgun three times before the deputies arrived - once inside the home and twice outside in the yard.

Detectives say they found one handgun near the suspect and one in the front yard.
