California Highway Patrol officials are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 2-year-old boy in San Bernardino Tuesday night.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- A 2-year-old boy has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in San Bernardino Tuesday night.

The boy's uncle, Nicholas Ortega, told Eyewitness News that his nephew, Jonathan Montes, died Thursday at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital.

The incident occurred on Perris Hill Road near Base Line Street.

Ortega said the impact threw the boy more than 100 feet into the roadway. He also said Jonathan suffered multiple head injuries, including a fractured skull.

The 2-year-old was playing catch with a friend at the time.

"He ran out to the middle of the street to get me, and that's when the car hit him head on... It didn't screech or it didn't slow down at all, it just kept going," he said.

The driver was likely going 40 mph in a 25 mph zone, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses reported seeing a silver sedan, possibly a Subaru or Mitsubishi Lancer, fleeing the scene.

Investigators were going through surveillance footage that may have captured evidence or clues that would aid officials.

Anyone with information on the suspect or investigation was urged to contact the CHP at (909) 383-4247.

A vigil will be held for the toddler Friday night at 8 p.m.
