15-year-old girl dies after being shot in head in Covina; suspects at large

COVINA, Calif. (KABC) -- A 15-year-old girl died Sunday afternoon after being shot in the head the previous evening in Covina, authorities said.

The victim was walking with a group of friends in the 4500 block of Heathdale Avenue about 9:45 p.m. when the apparently random shooting occurred.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, three men in a dark-colored SUV drove up to the group and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

The girl, who has not been identified publicly, was rushed to a hospital in grave condition. Authorities confirmed she succumbed to her injuries about noon Sunday.

The motive for the shooting was under investigation.
