BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (KABC) -- Some of the Southland's local mountains were hit with the first snowfall of the winter season as a powerful storm made its way through the region.

There was a layer of snow on the roadways up to Big Bear Mountain Tuesday morning, making the commute treacherous for drivers. The area received around 2 inches of snow.

Chain restrictions were in place for mountain roadways in surrounding areas as authorities warned of slippery road conditions.

Businesses in Big Bear welcomed the snow, whose economy depends on good conditions for snowboarding and skiing.

Residents in the community were also taking advantage of snowier conditions after facing one of the driest rain seasons on record.

"It's awesome. Bottom line is we need this for our community and I think it adds to the appeal," said resident Jason Schetter. "We just need more people to come up and have some fun with us."
