LA makes Amazon's list of possible cities for second HQ
Amazon is looking to expand its already massive operations.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Amazon has narrowed the pool of cities that could be the home for its second headquarters - and Los Angeles made the list.

The Seattle-based company plans to invest $5 billion in the new headquarters and could employ as many as 50,000 people in and around the city it chooses.

Cities are in fierce competition to lure the online retailing giant and the company said last year that it received 238 proposals.

"It's natural that we should be in the top 20," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said. "We'll keep our fingers crossed."

Some residents are concerned about the additional congestion associated with bringing in 50,000 new jobs.

But Bill Allen, CEO of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., noted the job growth will be gradual.

"Here's the good news: LA County has a labor market of 5 million people," Allen said. "Amazon is talking about adding 50,000 jobs, over a period of years. That's only a 1 percent addition to our labor force. And many of the people they would hire already live here."

Los Angeles is the only West Coast city among the 20 finalists. Here's the complete list.

- Atlanta, GA

- Austin, TX

- Boston, MA

- Chicago, IL

- Columbus, OH

- Dallas, TX

- Denver, CO

- Indianapolis, IN

- Los Angeles, CA

- Miami, FL

- Montgomery County, MD

- Nashville, TN

- Newark, NJ

- New York City, NY

- Northern Virginia, VA

- Philadelphia, PA

- Pittsburgh, PA

- Raleigh, NC

- Toronto, ON

- Washington D.C.

The online giant said it will make a final selection sometime this year.
