HIGHLAND PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An investigation is underway Sunday morning after two people were found shot, one fatally, near a homeless encampment by the 110 Freeway in Highland Park.

It all started when a man who was heard screaming for help managed to run from a shooting to the 300 block of Avenue 57, according to Los Angeles Police Department Detective David Alverez. Nearby neighbors heard the screams and helped the victim, who was shot in the neck and arm.

When officers arrived, they were alerted by the victim to a second gunshot victim in a homeless encampment on Avenue 52 along the Arroyo Seco riverbank, near the 110 Freeway on-ramp. The second victim was found dead inside the tent, Alverez said.

The surviving victim told investigators that both men were asleep inside the tent at about 4 a.m. when two suspects, believed to be in their 20s, broke into the encampment and opened fire.

Both victims are homeless. Their names have not been released. The survivor is expected to be out of the hospital this afternoon, authorities said.

Investigators said they do not believe either of the victims are suspects in the shooting.

A detailed description of the suspects was not immediately released as an investigation remained ongoing.
