7-Eleven clerk shot after chasing suspect who stole beer in Culver City

CULVER CITY, Calif. (KABC) -- A 7-Eleven clerk was shot after chasing a man who stole beer from the convenience store in Culver City, police said.

Police said the clerk was chasing the suspect, who allegedly stole several cases of beer from the store at 5900 Washington Blvd., when another suspect opened fire from a waiting vehicle.

The bullet grazed the clerk's leg and he was transported to UCLA Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Police have not made any arrests connected to the incident.

Authorities said the theft would have just been a misdemeanor, but since one of the suspects shot someone it is now considered attempted homicide or assault with a deadly weapon.

The suspect who stole the beer was described as a man in his mid-20s, standing at about 5 feet, 5 inches tall. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants and a baseball cap.

There was no description of the second suspect who fired shots from the vehicle. Police said the car may have been a late-model white Honda Civic hatchback.

Investigators said they would be getting surveillance video from the store and surrounding businesses.
