SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man was taken into custody after an hours-long barricade in Sylmar that ended with tear gas and partial destruction of the home where he was hiding.

The barricade started around 3 p.m. in the 13600 block of Lexicon Place in Sylmar. Police say a domestic dispute with family members resulted in a man barricading himself in a home with a hatchet.

He had made some threats against his mother and threatened to burn the house down, police said.

SWAT officers arrived and attempted to negotiate with the man.

When that didn't work, they deployed bearcats, rammed open the front door of the home and injected tear gas.

Finally more than seven hours after the incident began, they tore down the door of the garage and the shirtless man slowly emerged and surrendered, lying down on the driveway for officers to take him into custody. No serious injuries were reported.
