WESTLAKE DISTRICT, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An armed suspect who barricaded himself inside an apartment and held three people hostage was taken into police custody after a short standoff Sunday night.

A call came in around 7 p.m. regarding a barricaded suspect in the 200 block of South Carondelet Street. One of the victims inside the apartment had called police stating that he and two others were being held hostage.

The trio said they had locked themselves inside in a room away from the gunman.

"As the incident progressed, the suspect was able to manage to get into the room where the victims were being held. He grabbed one of the female victims and started physically assaulting her, at which time the command decision was made to make an entry," LAPD Sgt. Eric Rogers said.

A perimeter had been set up with SWAT on scene. Officers quickly moved in and took the suspect into custody. All three hostages were rescued.

One of them, a 16-year-old girl, was treated at the scene for injuries.

Authorities said the suspect and the victim were in an on-and-off relationship.
