ROWLAND HEIGHTS, Calif. (KABC) -- A security guard at a Rowland Heights jewelry store opened fire on a robbery suspect, who still managed to escape.

According to investigators, the suspect walked into Hing Wa Lee Jewelers at 1569 Fairway Drive around 3 p.m. Sunday, asked an employee to see a Rolex watch, and then ran off with it.

Authorities said a security guard chased the man and caught him.

After the robber broke free, the security guard apparently thought the man was pulling a gun. That's when the guard opened fire.

It's unclear if the man was wounded. The suspect jumped into the passenger side of an awaiting getaway car and escaped.

The suspect was described as being 6 feet tall and weighing about 240 pounds.

An investigation is underway.
