VENTURA, Calif. (KABC) -- A wily 23-year-old woman is on the run after escaping from the Ventura Police Department.

Police say Kelly Smith was arrested on Tuesday for possessing a stolen vehicle and assault with a deadly weapon.

During a call for service, Smith nearly struck a police officer with her vehicle while trying to flee the scene.

Authorities say while Smith was in the booking area, she somehow slipped out of her handcuffs and ran out of the police station.

An extensive search was done of the area, but she was not located.

Smith was last seen wearing a blue shirt and jeans, and her hair is dyed red.

If you spot her, call Ventura police at (805) 339-4309.
