COMMERCE, Calif. (KABC) -- An overnight grass fire partially shut down the 5 Freeway in Commerce, snarling early morning traffic in the area.

The fire was reported near Slauson Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

The blaze was knocked down, but it prompted a closure of all southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway. Traffic was at a crawl through the area. Lanes began reopening around 6:30 a.m.

Several northbound lanes were closed but have since reopened.

It was not clear when the lanes would be reopened.
