Abducted toddler found naked and with head shaved in Massachusetts

HAMILTON, MA -- The former baby sitter of a toddler who disappeared from her home and was found sitting by the side of a road miles away - alone, naked and with her head shaved - has been charged with kidnapping, police said Saturday.

Abigail Hanna, 21, was being held without bail on charges including kidnapping, assault and battery on a child, and breaking and entering in the nighttime for the alleged abduction of 2-year-old Lyndon Albers.

Hanna used to baby-sit the girl, who was reported missing from her home on Friday morning, Hamilton Police Chief Russell Stevens said in a statement.

The girl was reunited with her family and taken to Boston Children's Hospital, police said. She remained there Saturday night but her condition was improving, prosecutors said in a statement, without elaborating.

The shivering toddler was discovered by passing motorists about seven miles from her home in the town of Rowley, hours after she disappeared from her home.

Tom Crosby said he and his wife spotted the child on the side of the road, then bundled her into their car. The girl had a large contusion on her head, he said.

There was no immediate word if investigators had established a possible motive, though Stevens said the incident was not random and "not indicative of any continuing or wider threat." More information would be released when "appropriate," the chief said.

Hanna, a resident of nearby Topsfied, was expected to remain in custody over the weekend and be arraigned Monday in district court, said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, a spokeswoman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

It could not immediately be determined if Hanna had legal representation.
