SAUSALITO, Calif. (KABC) -- Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur Davis, died Monday night in Northern California of a possible heart attack, Marin County Sheriff's Department officials confirmed. She was 69.

In a series of tweets, sheriff's officials said deputies responded to reports of a possible cardiac arrest around 9:34 p.m. at her home in Sausalito. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly before 10:30 p.m.

The sheriff's office will lead an investigation to determine the exact cause and manner of Davis' death.

Born Alice Faye Williams, Davis changed her name as an adult when she became a political activist and joined the Black Panther movement. While she was pregnant with her son in 1971, she was incarcerated with other Panthers and faced conspiracy charges that were later dismissed.

Tupac was killed in drive-by shooting while leaving a boxing event in Las Vegas in 1996.
