NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- An 8-year-old boy on a bicycle was struck and killed by a trash truck in Newport Beach, police said.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. at Fullerton Avenue and E. 15th Street, which is near Newport Harbor High School.

The child was struck by a truck with CR&R Environmental Services, which is contracted to provide trash service for the city, police said.

Investigators say they have not located any witnesses to the incident and asked anyone with information to contact Newport Beach police at (949)644-3717.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident.

"We have a police chaplain on scene now," said Lt. Jeff Brouwer, with the Newport Beach police. "They're here mostly first and foremost for the family."

Parents and neighbors in the area said the street is dangerous for children.

"This street is really bad for kids," said Newport Beach resident Dana Cipolla. "When school gets out and cars are going, there's no place for them to ride their bikes."
