SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- A pursuit suspect accused of firing at police in South Gate was shot and killed early Sunday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detectives responded to Tweedy Boulevard and Burtis Street at about 1:32 a.m. to assist South Gate police in investigating the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting.

Sheriff's officials said officers conducted a traffic stop when the suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. A pursuit quickly ended due to poor driving conditions, but the suspect vehicle continued.

The driver then crashed near Tweedy Avenue at Burtis Street. Two suspects in the vehicle fled on foot, and the passenger was detained without incident.

The driver fired at one of the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred, sheriff's officials said. The suspect was struck in the upper torso and pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured in the shooting, and the suspect's weapon was recovered at the scene.

No other suspects were outstanding as the investigation was ongoing.
