HAWTHORNE, Calif. (KABC) -- A fetus was found in a dumpster in the parking lot of a shopping center in Hawthorne Friday morning.

"We're not sure exactly how it got here. It was located inside of a bag inside the dumpster," Hawthorne police Lt. Jim Royer said.

A man, who wished to remain anonymous, made the discovery while digging for recyclables behind several businesses in the 5400 block of W. El Segundo Boulevard.

He didn't report what he found but an employee from Coast Laundry found the same bag at about 7:30 a.m. and called police.

Los Angeles County coroner's officials were also called to the scene to investigate.

The fetus was approximately 15 to 18 weeks, Hawthorne police said.

"We are looking for someone who could assist us in finding out exactly how this fetus became in this dumpster," Royer said.

Anyone with further information on this case was asked to contact the Hawthorne Police Department.

Meanwhile, authorities remind the public that L.A. County's "Safe Surrender" law allows a parent or guardian to give up an infant at a hospital or fire station if the child is no more than three days old and shows no signs of abuse.
