Help pours in to rebuild Valley Rescue Mission
There's a fundraising campaign underway to help the Valley Rescue Mission, which lost almost everything in a fire.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- There's a fundraising campaign underway to help the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, which lost almost everything in a fire last weekend.

The fire was devastating, fueled by wooden pallets stored in an adjacent property. It tore through the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, forcing 26 people onto the street.

"On Saturday, I was devastated. By Sunday, I was overwhelmed. And on Monday I was amazed at the amazing community support that our organization," said Wade Trimmer, director of the mission

The mission lost housing, transportation and goods that were meant to be sold in their thrift store. What was lost is now being replaced, and shelter residents are overwhelmed by the help.

"There are so many volunteers coming in and out. Red Cross is amazing," said Nancy Arias, a shelter resident.

A new shelter is already being set up in Northridge, and Wal-Mart donated $50,000 to help the mission re-build. Charities, businesses and Valley residents are all trying to help.

"Each of the council members who are standing here with me have agreed to contribute $2,500 to help get the mission back on its feet," said L.A. City Councilman Paul Krekorian.

But more is needed, and residents are convinced the help will come. The fire may have destroyed thousands of dollars in property, but it is also forging this community in a way many could never have seen.

Anyone who wishes to help can donate items to any LAFD station in the Valley, or you can donate on the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission's website.
