HOUSTON (KABC) -- A Houston man fatally shot four children Wednesday as well as two adults who were caring for them, and critically wounded a 15-year-old girl. She survived, managed to call 911 and warned deputies that the suspect planned to kill her grandparents.

Harris County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a shooting at a home in the 700 block of Leaflet Lane near Interstate 45 and Cypresswood in Spring around 6 p.m. and found two adults and three children dead. A fourth child later died at a nearby hospital.

The victims included two boys, ages 4 and 14; two girls, ages 7 and 9; a 39-year-old man; and a 33-year-old woman.

The suspected gunman fled the scene and led police on a brief car chase before being intercepted in a cul-de-sac. A standoff between deputies and the suspect ensued shortly before 7 p.m. The suspect allegedly held a handgun to his head as he sat inside his car.

After three hours of waiting and negotiations, the suspect emerged from his car, raised his hands and sank to his knees as deputies placed him under arrest.

Deputy Thomas Gilliland of the Harris County Sheriff's Office described the man as in his 30s with a beard "and cool as a cucumber." He said that when he and other officers approached, the man was "just sitting in his car looking out at us."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

UPDATE: An earlier report said the suspect was the slain children's father, but according to ABC News, police now say he may be their uncle.
