Man arrested for attempting to murder Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy in 2010

LOMITA, Calif. (KABC) -- A 34-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempting to murder a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy in 2010.

Ernesto Casillas, 34, is accused of shooting an LASD deputy on May 6, 2010 around 1:30 a.m. during a traffic stop.

At the time, the female deputy was working in a one-person patrol car in Lomita. She stopped a black Chevrolet Silverado truck in the 1700 block of 257th Street.

As she approached the vehicle, authorities said Casillas fired several rounds at her, striking her. He then drove off and eventually fled to Mexico.

In 2014, Casillas was arrested for an unrelated charge by Mexican police in Jalisco. He was then brought to the Los Angeles International Airport where he was transferred over to the custody of LASD homicide detectives.

He was transported to the Lomita Sheriff's Station and booked for attempted murder. He is being held without bail. Authorities said a booking photo would not be released at this time.
