JOSHUA TREE, Calif. (KABC) -- A Marine stationed in Twentynine Palms was arrested in November for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend's 5-month-old baby girl into a coma.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies received a report on Nov. 19 that a 5-month-old baby girl was hospitalized at High Desert Medical Center suffering from a brain hemorrhage. The girl was later flown to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital in a comatose state.

Detectives interviewed suspect John Rafeal Jeter, 24, a Marine stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, on Nov. 21, after the victim was identified as the daughter of Jeter's girlfriend.

Jeter was subsequently arrested and booked at the Central Detention Center for assault resulting in death, comatose state or paralysis of a child under 8. He was held on $500,000 bail and scheduled to be arraigned on December 9.
