Metrolink lowering fares by 45 percent in 2016

Metrolink commuters at the Moorpark station wait for the next train on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015.

Metrolink is lowering fares in 2016 in order to encourage riders to take more local trips on trains.

Beginning Jan.1, Metrolink is reducing the price of one-way, short-distance tickets to as low as $3 and $1.50 for seniors.

The $3 fare is good for up to two stations - for example, riding one-way from California State University, Los Angeles to Union Station.

Metrolink says the new fare is a 45 percent discount to the current average of $5.50 for a one-way ticket between stations.

It's hoping to encourage more local trips using Metrolink to complement local bus service.
