Mother, 16-year-old daughter shot in Pico-Union area
A woman and her 16-year-old daughter were shot after a confrontation with gang members at a bus stop in Pico-Union.

PICO-UNION, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 16-year-old girl and her mother were shot late Sunday after they tried to flee gang members who confronted them at a bus stop in the Pico-Union district, police said.

The incident began when two 16-year-old girls were out Sunday around 11:40 p.m. at a bus stop near Pico Boulevard and Westlake Avenue.

Police say a car full of gang members confronted the two girls, offering them marijuana and asking them if they were in a gang.

One girl called her mother, who rushed out with the girl's sister from a nearby apartment.

They tried to get the gang members to leave them alone, but ended up running away when one of the men pulled a gun. Shots were fired, hitting the 16-year-old girl in the leg and the mother twice in the torso. Both are expected to survive.

Police plan to check footage from the many surveillance cameras in the area.

Investigators asked anyone with information to call police at 1(800)-LAPD-247.
