IREDEL COUNTY, North Carolina (KABC) -- A North Carolina man is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl while he lived in her closet, deputies said.

Jared Workman, 27, was charged with 19 counts of statutory rape and was being held on an about $1 million bond.

Workman is suspected of meeting the teen online, going to her home and spending a week hiding out in her closet. He allegedly repeatedly sexually assaulted her, deputies said.

The girl's mother, who did not want to be identified, discovered him when she opened the closet door. Workman then ran away, leaving his wallet and phone behind, the mom said.

"I was sort of shocked more than anything," she said. "It tears me apart to hold it back on what he's done."
