New details released in search for gunman who killed worker at Jack in the Box in El Monte

EL MONTE, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities have announced new information in the investigation into the fatal shooting of an employee at a Jack in the Box in El Monte, whose killer remains at large.

Juan Vidal was killed on the evening of Oct. 21 during an attempted robbery at the fast-food restaurant in the 9200 block of Flair Drive. Two days earlier, the same gunman and an accomplice robbed a Subway restaurant in Irwindale, Los Angeles County sheriff's Detective Adan Torres said at a Monday news conference.

Surveillance video from the Subway robbery shows a person wearing similar clothing and the same Halloween mask as the one used in Vidal's murder, the investigator said.

"Somebody will recognize him if they view it," Torres said of the footage. "If they view his body or his clothing, they'll recognize him."

Mary Smay, the victim's mother, reiterated her emotional plea for the public's help in identifying the shooter.

"I really pray that somebody that knows this man will turn him in," she said. "He has no business out running the streets."

Jack in the Box, the city of El Monte and Los Angeles County have announced rewards in the case totaling $55,000.
