Police say video captured deadly hit and run in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- The deadly hit and run of a 54-year-old pedestrian was caught on camera in Santa Ana on Monday, authorities said.

The victim was discovered at about 5:50 a.m. when officers responded to a report of a "man down" in the area of First and Fairview streets, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Initially described by authorities as being in his 60s, he was not immediately identified.

One of his shoes was seen alongside a curb on First Street after investigators placed a yellow evidence marker next to it. The victim's other shoe was located some 50 feet away.

Police believe the man was struck by one vehicle while walking in the street. Authorities originally stated they believed the man was hit by two vehicles, but later said they believed he was only hit by one.

Paint chips recovered at the scene "indicate that a white vehicle struck the pedestrian, and we also have some other parts that may also have part numbers on them," Bao said, adding that investigators plan to search a database for the numbers in an attempt to find that vehicle, a Toyota Tacoma truck.

The truck is said to be a single-cab, four-wheel-drive truck with front-end damage and a buckled hood.

Authorities said surveillance video nearby caught the crash.

The victim lived near the crash site, according to police, but it was unclear why he was walking in the roadway at that hour.
