An investigation is underway after a police officer shot a man in the Westlake District after he allegedly threatened some people with a weapon.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Coronado Street when two civilians flagged down officers and told them two men pointed a gun at them.

Officers tracked down the two suspects and tried to make contact. One of the suspects complied and the other did not. That's when the officer-involved shooting occurred.

Only one officer fired a weapon. The suspect was struck in the abdomen area. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, according to LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado.

Preciado said a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Both suspects were taken into custody. No officers were injured.

The two officers involved in the incident were being interviewed separately. They were not wearing body cameras.

Detectives are looking into whether either of the suspects had any kind of criminal history.
