San Bernardino County officials address online rumors of threats to community

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- Rumors circulating on social media about threats to public places in San Bernardino prompted county officials to denounce the claims Friday afternoon.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon issued a statement saying the messages were a hoax.

The statement read in part: "We are aware of the rumors on social media claiming to have come from law enforcement advising the public to stay away from movie theaters, malls, etc. due to threats. These messages are unsubstantiated claims of additional threats against our community."

McMahon added that citizens should be wary of such messages and follow verified law enforcement social media accounts and press releases for alerts.
