Suspect arrested for starting fire in Lake Arrowhead home with deputy inside

LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif. (KABC) -- San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies arrested a man suspected of setting several fires to a house in Lake Arrowhead, including one while a deputy was inside the home.

Authorities said the incident happened around 3:12 a.m. Friday in the 400 block of Merrimack Drive. Deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Station responded to reports of arson at a home.

The victim called 911 to report the fire, and they were able to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose before deputies arrived.

An investigation began when authorities arrived at the residence, and they discovered the suspect had lit several fires around the home. The two residents in the house were able to put out all of the fires.

While a deputy was inside speaking with one of the victims, the suspect started another fire in the home using a propane tank and paper. The deputy noticed the smoke and saw the suspect fleeing the scene.

The deputy detained the suspect and was able to put out the blaze with a hose. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Joseph Cardenas, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted murder of a peace officer and arson.

Cardenas was booked into the West Valley Detention Center.
