Suspect arrested in fatal Jurupa Valley road rage fight

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A 35-year-old Jurupa Valley man was arrested on suspicion of killing a man after a fight in early January.

Around 5 p.m. on Jan. 4, Jurupa Valley police responded to a call of a fight between two men as the result of road rage. The two men were seen near Skyview Road and Avenue Juan Bautista, police said. When officers arrived at the scene, the two men were gone.

Several hours later, Jerry Lakes, 55, checked himself into a local hospital complaining of pain related to the fight.

On Jan. 12, Lakes died of medical complications due to head trauma from the fight.

Detectives from Jurupa Valley Police Department and investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit took over the investigation and began looking for the other man involved in the incident.

On Jan. 18, detectives and investigators conducted an informational checkpoint near the area where the fight occurred. Police handed out fliers containing a composite sketch of the second man and his vehicle.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, officers arrested Steven Lesher, 35, who was positively identified as the second man involved in the fight. According to authorities, Lesher was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center and faces homicide charges.
