SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect was killed following an officer-involved shooting in South Los Angeles on Monday, authorities from the LAPD said.

Two officers were in the area of 28th Street and Maple Avenue at about 1 p.m., when they discovered a man they thought was burglarizing a car in the area.

The suspect then tried to run away and made his way into the backyard of a home, where the officer-involved shooting occurred.

The man was struck after one officer fired at him, police said, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities were not yet saying what prompted the officer to open fire, but confirmed a weapon, believed to have belonged to the suspect, was recovered.

The identity of the suspect was not yet released.

Authorities were investigating the shooting, and said neither officer had a body camera or patrol car with a dashcam.

It was first reported that officers responded to a call of a man with a gun, but authorities said the incident began with the suspect possibly burglarizing a vehicle.
