CULVER CITY, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspected drunk driver lost control of the car, jumped a curb and crashed into a church in Culver City during a street race against another vehicle, police said.
Investigators said two cars were traveling on Washington Boulevard around 1 a.m. Wednesday at a high rate of speed approaching the bend at Kensington Road when one of the vehicles lost control and jumped a curb.
That car went airborne and then slammed through the wall of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the 11800 block of West Washington Boulevard.
Two people inside the vehicle were unresponsive and were taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center with what appeared to be severe injuries, police said.
The passenger needed surgery, and the driver was reported in stable condition.
The second car involved in the apparent street race also lost control but did not crash. Authorities stopped the car from leaving the scene, and the driver and sole occupant were detained.
Upon investigation, police found that the drivers of both vehicles were under the influence of alcohol.
