VICTORVILLE, Calif. (KABC) -- A 16-year-old male high school student was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a fellow student who has a diminished mental capacity in Victorville.

Authorities said around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies and detectives from the Victorville police station responded to Silverado High School in the 14000 block of Cobalt Road. Authorities were responding to reports of an assault that happened on the school grounds after hours.

During a preliminary investigation, investigators discovered that the victim, 15, was approached by the suspect, who asked her if she would like to do homework with him. The two have a class together, according to authorities.

The victim agreed and followed the suspect behind some bushes on the outskirts of the school grounds, where authorities said he assaulted her. A school official saw the suspect fleeing from the scene and quickly found the victim.

Detectives also discovered the victim had a diminished mental capacity and spoke at the level of a 4 or 5-year-old.

The suspect was identified and taken into custody later that day. He is currently on juvenile probation for a previous assault that was similar in nature to Thursday's incident.
