NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles police say the mother of a toddler who was found wandering alone in North Hollywood Tuesday morning will not be facing charges.

The 2-year-old girl was found by a tenant in a hallway on the fourth floor of an apartment building in the 5400 block of Tujunga Avenue at about 5:20 a.m. She was wearing only a tank top and a diaper.

Neighbors in the area did not recognize the toddler and contacted police, who then issued a press release asking for the public's help.

At about 7 a.m., the mother of the toddler came into the North Hollywood Community Police Station. She told police she was sleeping with the child in their apartment and the child must have woken up, unlocked the door and walked out.

The unidentified mother told police her daughter has been curious about doors and locks. The family just recently moved into the apartment complex, which is why neighbors did not recognize the toddler.

This is the first time the toddler has been found wandering alone despite earlier reports from police.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on this case was asked to contact police at (818) 754-8429.
