Aparajita Gupta, a 21-year-old woman, was visiting the Aran Islands when it happened.

"At first I didn't even see it coming, so I tried to run, and the wave just pushed me off my perch," she said.

She fell about 50 feet onto rocks below and broke her ankle.

"The water cushioned my fall, so when I finally fell, the impact wasn't as great as it could have been, and next to me there was a boulder, and I held on to it," Gupta said.

She clung to that boulder until a paramedic that was visiting the island rushed over to help, making a rope out of a jacket, tying it to a backpack and lowering it down to pull Gupta to safety.

"We were all very shaken, but I suppose we just did what anyone would do in that situation, just try to help out," said Seamus McCarthy.

Her rescuer will be awarded a medal for bravery later this year.
