BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A police officer was injured in an officer-involved shooting while responding to an incident in Boyle Heights Friday.

The shooting took place at the corner of Malabar Street and Fickett Street at 7 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers assigned to the Hollenbeck Gang Unit responded to the incident.

One officer was shot in the arm and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The suspect, believed to be a known gang member, was later taken into custody, according to LAPD Chief Michel Moore.

The injured officer is a five-year veteran of the police force. He and another officer were trying to stop a man on the street for investigative purposes before the shooting occurred.

"Fortunately our officer will survive that injury. I just visited him in the hospital. He's in good spirits. He's stabilized and we're blessed tonight this injury was not more serious and it did not take his life," Moore said.

It was unknown what precipitated the shooting. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was not injured.
