FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Fountain Valley police officers were investigating a fatal collision early Saturday morning when the driver of a pickup truck drove toward them twice, prompting them to open fire, authorities said.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 11:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Magnolia Street and Edinger Avenue, according to the Westminster Police Department.

After a Lexus crossed the median and slammed into a Toyota, a man and a woman in their 20s were transported to a hospital. The woman later died. She was not immediately identified.

The cause of the crash was unknown.

About 5:15 a.m. Saturday, Fountain Valley officers were at the scene when the driver of a black Dodge pick-up truck drove toward them, authorities said.

"The suspect turned around and drove at officers a second time, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," according to a statement from the Fountain Valley Police Department. The driver fled the scene and was arrested at Edinger Avenue and Bushard Street. His name was not released.

No officers were injured. The suspect sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment, the press release said.

The investigation was being conducted by the Westminster and Fountain Valley police departments and the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
