'Operation Boo' keeps sex offenders away on Halloween

SACRAMENTO, Calif (KABC) -- An annual program forces registered sex offenders to put signs on their doors around Halloween time to keep children away from their homes while trick or treating.

The program, known as "Operation Boo," will require the offenders to have a sign that reads, "We do not participate in trick or treating."

A San Diego County sex offender is suing the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation over the sign, saying it is unconstitutional to force all sex offenders to put the sign on their doors. He said his crime happened 30 years ago, and his victim was an adult.

Registered sex offender and Sacramento resident, Jerry Evans, who spent 20 years in prison for his crimes, supports the program.

"I think it should be just for pedophiles, myself," said Evans. "I had molested my children. I had molested several other young girls."
