MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- Blue jellyfish have invaded Malibu!

About a billion of these sea creatures have washed ashore on the West Coast in the past few weeks. The blue jellyfish have distinctive sails, allowing them to ride along the ocean surface.

Every few years, the winds push the blue jellyfish ashore, where they can't survive. Areas of Northern California spotted them several weeks ago.

In California, they were last seen along the coast in August.
