Garcetti eyes LAPD video policy change, advocates 2 tax measures on ballot

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- On ABC7's "Eyewitness Newsmakers: Ask the Mayor," Mayor Eric Garcetti said the Police Commission will begin hearings on the release of Los Angeles Police Department video, and in a few months, there is likely to be a change in policy.

He cautioned that while video may be released sooner, it will not be released immediately after an incident.

Garcetti pointed to the recent police shooting of a suicidal 16-year-old. He said there was no reason to put the teenager's family through the anguish of those images.

The circumstances leading to the teen's death weren't known immediately.

With mail ballots about to go out for the Nov. 8 election, the mayor put in a final word for the two measures he's backing: Measure M for transportation and Measure HHH for homeless housing.

Measure M is a county-wide 1/2 cent sales tax increase to raise $120 billion for transit and roads.

It includes 10 new rail lines. Some South Los Angeles leaders oppose it, saying it doesn't address their traffic issues soon enough.

Measure HHH increases city property tax to raise $1.2 billion for homeless housing.

It would build 10,000 permanent supportive units. It would also set aside money for low income housing.

Garcetti also talked about the ongoing review of the city's electronic billboard regulations.

Viewers are worried digital billboards will end up close to residential areas instead of remaining in commercial and entertainment zones.
