Gardena students compete in 2019 SciFest SoCal

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Little einsteins gathered at the Los Angeles Convention Center this weekend for the west coast debut of the 2019 SciFest SoCal.

"It's so exciting to be here," Aidan Robinette, a 5th grader at 156th Street Elementary school, said. "It really motivates me to try all of these different things and try them out at my own school."

Robinette was with his school at the festival competing in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) challenge put by the Los Angeles Clippers.

His team put together a flip art poster of the Clippers logo.

"The art that was put into this, basically the design with the poster," Zoe Rhodes, a 5th grader at 156th Street Elementary school, said.

The projects had to showcase science and basketball at the same time, but it wasn't an easy task.

"It was definitely very hard because the very first time we flipped it, it was completely off," Rhodes said. "And we were so mad because we spent all this time."

But Rhodes and Robinette's team got it down just in time for the competition.

A total of 28 projects are in the race to win 2 $2,000 awards. The won't be announced until the Clippers' home game on March 30th.

Meanwhile, Robinette is going to steam his way to success.

"I want to be a physician at SpaceX and try to build one of the first rockets that go to Pluto," Robinette said.

The SciFest will be open to the public on Saturday with free admission.

The festival was made possible by the U.S.A. Science and Engineering Festival and the LA Clippers.
